The story of Lial
Our Foundation.
The story of Lial Catholic School is rooted in the vision and spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame, founded in Coesfeld, Germany, in 1850 by Aldegonda Wolbring (Sister Maria Aloysia) and Lisette Kühling (Sister Maria Ignatia). Lial proudly bears a name inspired by these two remarkable women, combining “Li” from Lisette and “Al” from Aldegonda. Their belief in the dignity of every person, the transformative power of education, and a life devoted to serving others continues to shape the heart of our school today.
Lial’s story began in the early 1970s with the vision of Sister Mary Arthur, SND, who imagined a school where children could grow academically, spiritually, and personally in an environment unlike any other. Her vision embraced open spaces that encouraged collaboration, quiet places for reflection and creativity, and an abundance of natural light that connected learning to the beauty of God’s creation. Flexible schedules and multi-age classrooms allowed students the freedom to learn at their own pace, interact across age groups, and develop a strong sense of independence and community. More than five decades later, these distinctive elements remain central to The Lial Way.
Since its founding in 1972, Lial has grown into a thriving Catholic school recognized for academic excellence, individualized learning, and a deep commitment to educating the whole child. Twice honored as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Lial continues to build upon the vision of its founders while remaining firmly rooted in the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
Today, Lial carries that legacy forward through a close partnership with families, nurturing each child’s unique gifts and fostering a lifelong love of learning, a strong foundation of faith, and a genuine commitment to serving others. What began as a bold vision for education has become a lasting tradition—one that continues to prepare compassionate, confident, faith-filled young people to make a meaningful difference in the world.
